Many clinicians set out to treat male couples with the sense that, in the end, all couples are alike. Although male couples share the basic existential and relational angst that all couples face, there are important differences around norms and expectations. Grounded in the theoretical foundation of Psychodynamic-Systemic Couples Therapy, the presenter will address the important themes and unique challenges faced by male couples that revolve around sex, gender, intimacy, and the development of a positive identity as gay men and as a gay couple.
Dr. Johnson is in private practice in Metuchen and Morristown. He has a background in Family Systems approaches and Relational Psychoanalytic Treatment. He trained in family therapy at UMDNJ and taught at the Center for Family Studies and the Family Institute of NJ. Dr. Johnson trained in relational psychoanalysis at the NYU Postdoctoral Program in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis, and is on faculty at CPPNJ and the Stephen Mitchell Center for Relational Studies in NYC. He is also the Director of Training in the Couples Therapy Training Program at CPPNJ.
